Haiti Earthquake 2010

Haiti, the first Caribbean state to achieve independence, occupies the
western third of the island of Hispaniola. Mountainous with a tropical
climate, it is the poorest country in the Americas due to decades of
violence and instability. There is a huge income gap between the
Creole-speaking black majority and the French-speaking mulattos
(mixed African and European descent). Mulattos, only 5 percent of the
population, control most of the wealth. Haiti became the first black
republic in 1804 after a successful slave revolt against the French. As
Haiti celebrated 200 years of independence, a rebellion toppled the
government in February 2004.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne, approximately 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

By January 24, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake; the Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. The government of Haiti also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.
